Over half a billion dollars have now been raised for Star Citizen’s development, including $100 million since last November.

Based on a report by Eurogamer, the space trading and combat sim is now reporting $500,111,757 in funding.

It all started with Star Citizen’s $2 million Kickstarter campaign back in October 2012. Since its inception, Cloud Imperium Games has raised increasing amounts of money, surpassing $400 million just ten months ago.

However, despite this staggering sum, the game is still in alpha and no release date has been set as of yet.

As a point of comparison, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt cost $81 million to develop and took about five years. The cost of Red Dead Redemption ranged from $80 to $100 million, and it took five years to finish.

Christopher Roberts, the creator of Star Citizen, said in 2020 that the various gameplay elements promised over the years won’t take decades to implement.

But a year later, an advertising watchdog warned the studio about marketing concept ships that didn’t exist yet.
