Pokemon Prism: Everything You Need to Know

Pokemon Prism

Creator: Koolboyman

Progress: Completed

Platform: GameBoy Color

Hack of: Pokemon Crystal

Pokemon Prism is a rom hack of Pokemon Crystal. This rom hack’s story takes place in a new region called Naljo.

The game improves upon Pokemon Crystal by introducing new mechanics and refining the existing gameplay.

Who is This Game For?

You should play this game if you miss Pokemon Gold, Silver, or Crystal and are looking to experience it in a new way.

However, this game may not be your cup of tea if you’re not used to GameBoy Color’s vintage graphics. If so, I recommend checking out Pokemon Sacred Gold or Pokemon GS Chronicles

Features and Additions

New and Old Regions

The game creators have come up with a huge new region called Naljo. It’s bigger than the Johto region.

You can also visit Pokemon Brown’s Rijon region, Pokemon Glazed’s Tunod region, and the original Kanto and Johto regions.

Pokemon from Gen 1 to 4

You don’t have to limit yourself to Gen 2 in this rom hack. Pokemon Prism boasts 253 Pokemon from Gen 1 to 4. Plus, some legendary Fakemon.

Trainer Customization

You don’t have to play with the pre-made character. In Pokemon Prism, you can customize your character through 12 trainer options (6 male, 6 female).

Play as Your Pokemon

Some areas are restricted. Here, only Pokemon can enter. If you want to explore these areas, you’ll need to send the first Pokemon in your party in there.

New Types

The game creators introduced tons of new stuff here. There are three new Pokemon types i.e. Gas, Sound, and Fairy.

You are probably already aware of Fairy-types so here’s how Gas and Sound-types work.

Gas-type moves:

  • Super effective against: Fighting, Fire, and Fairy-types
  • Not effective against: Rock, Sound, Grass, and Ice-types

Gas-type Pokemon: Koffing, Weezing, Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Torkoal

These Pokemon can resist Fighting, Fairy, and Ground-types. But are weak to Fire, Grass, Electric, and Tri-types.

Sound-type moves:

  • Super effective against: Ghost, Steel, and Water-types
  • Not effective against: Fighting, and Bug-types
  • Have zero effect against: Sound-types

Sound-type Pokemon: Igglybuff, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff, Misdreavus, Mismagius, Whismur, Loudred, Exploud, Chingling, Chimecho, Porygon-Z.

These Pokemon can resist Rock, Steel, Gas, and Water-types. But are weak to Fighting, Bug, Electric, and Tri-types.

New Moves

Just like new Pokemon types, there are new moves in this game as well. This includes rare types only found on some moves i.e. Tri and Prism-type.

Tri Attack:

  • Super effective against: Flying, Bug, Gas, Sound, and Grass-types.
  • Not very effective against: Fighting, Rock, Fire, Water, and Dragon-types
  • Have zero effect against: Ground-types

Prism Spray:

This move randomly selects another type every time it is used.

Documentation

A slight downside to amazing fan games like Pokemon Prism is, unironically, the changes. It can be difficult to know where your favorite Pokemon is hiding or how to proceed further when stuck.

Luckily for us, this game’s developers have gone above and beyond by documenting each and every change. Here’s the Google Sheet made by the game creators themselves: Pokemon Prism Documentation
